Epidemiology of osteoporosis in Silesia

Number of patients seeking for counseling related to osteoporosis both in GPs and specialists in the years 2002-2003 rose in Silesian Voivodship. A total number of patients treated or counseled for osteoporosis was reduced in 2004 in almost all age groups. . In the group up to 30y.o. the amount of men and women was comparable. In the subsequent group ages number of women rose significant, so as in 50+y.o. was 4-7 fold greater than men. Treatment and counseling of osteoporosis in GPs and specialty practices begins at the age of 50. Patients’ preferences of specialties were: rheumatology, orthopaedics, less frequently rehabilitation and gynaecology. Patients living in big agglomerations were treated more often. Least of them were living in farming areas of the South and West of region. Hospital admissions linked with osteoporosis were most often in the rheumatology ward, traumatology-orthopaedics, geriatrics, nephrology and internal diseases ward. Moreover patients were treated in centers of general rehabilitation and daily care units.
