Foot alloplasty and its potential complications – the ankle joint and the metatarsophalangeal joint

Excellent long-term results of the total hip and knee replacementcreates natural extrapolation of the expected results to that in the foot and ankle. Despite growing number of publications of long-term results, so far they failed to precisely define their role in the management of advanced arthritis and deformation and its advantages over the arthrodesis. It is proposed to create a European registries that should give valuable data and aid in decision making for physicians, patients and payers. In this paper, based own experience and literature, the author presents the indications and contraindications for ankle and I-st metatarsophalangeal joint arthroplasty with supported by clinical descritptions.
