Reporting problems in lower spine area ailments in penitentiaries inmates in selected districts in the years 1996-1998

Introduction and aim of the work: conducting the analysis of the disease causes of the lower spinal area, being the reason of the convicts attempts for being granted the interrupted penalty, and the analysis of which institutions most often submitted motions for examinations by the Medical Boards of the Prison Health Service. Material and Methods: the reports have been analyzed of the Medical Boards of the Prison Health Service of the Katowice, Łódź and Warsaw Districts in the years 1996-1998, pertaining to the lower spinal area ailments, in accordance with the international statistical classification of diseases and health problems (G 50-G 59, M 45-M 54, S 30-S 39). Results: the examined convicts with the ailments of the lower spinal area received the motion for the interrupted penalty because of the recommendations for a surgery most often (more than 75 %) due to the hernitation of the nucleus pulposus, accompanied by typical clinical symptoms. The greatest number of motions for interrupted penalties were received by the inmates directed by the Court. Conclusions: the ratios of the issued reports with the motions for the interrupted penalty for 1000 convicts (average) in the Łódź District were rather high with increase dynamics. The most numerous group of those released from the penitentiaries in the result of the Medical Boards reports, confirmed by the ruling of the disposing organ, were the convicts from the group of the offences against property (art.199-216). The average age of those provisionally detained was higher than the average age of the convicts for whom the Medical Boards motioned for the interrupted penalties.
